Lesson 04: Building a major scale anywhere

Why does "do re mi" sound right starting on C but wrong starting on D?

If you play the white keys straight up from C, you get the familiar "do re mi fa sol la ti do" — it sounds complete and happy. Play the white keys straight up from D instead and something sounds off, a little sour. Same white keys, different starting point, different feeling. The reason is not magic: a major scale is a specific pattern of distances, and only starting on C do the white keys happen to match that pattern. Learn the pattern and you can rebuild that "right" sound starting anywhere. This lesson hands you the recipe.

Explanation

The major scale is a fixed step pattern

A major scale is seven notes built by stacking a specific sequence of whole and half steps, then arriving back at the starting note an octave up. The pattern, using W for whole step and H for half step, is1:

W – W – H – W – W – W – H

That is it. Seven steps that land you on the eighth note (the octave). Every major scale, in every key, uses this same order of whole and half steps1.

The diagram traces the pattern starting on C, showing the distance between each pair of notes:

Read it left to right: C to D is a whole step, D to E whole, E to F a half step (one of our natural half steps from Lesson 02), F to G whole, G to A whole, A to B whole, B to C a half step (the other natural half step). The two H's in the pattern land exactly on E-F and B-C.

Why C major is all white keys

Here is the payoff of Lesson 02. The white keys already have their two half steps sitting at E-F and B-C, and those are precisely where the major pattern's two H's fall when you start on C. So the white keys from C to C match W-W-H-W-W-W-H perfectly — no black keys needed1. That is why C major is the one major scale with no sharps or flats1, and why it is where everyone starts.

Start somewhere else and you need a black key

Try the pattern starting on G. Apply W-W-H-W-W-W-H:

  • G +W→ A, A +W→ B, B +H→ C, C +W→ D, D +W→ E, E +W→ F-sharp, F-sharp +H→ G.

The sixth step (E up a whole step) lands on F-sharp, not F — because E to F is only a half step, so a whole step from E must go past F to F-sharp. If you had played plain F, the pattern would break. So G major needs one sharp: F-sharp. The pattern is fixed; the accidentals are whatever it takes to keep the pattern intact from a new starting note.

Worked example (follow along)

Build the F major scale using W-W-H-W-W-W-H.

  1. F +W→ G, G +W→ A. The third step is a half step, and a half step up from A is B-flat (a whole step would have gone all the way to B).
  2. Continue: B-flat +W→ C, C +W→ D, D +W→ E, E +H→ F.
  3. Result: F, G, A, B-flat, C, D, E, F. F major needs one flat: B-flat. The pattern demanded a half step at the third position, and A to B is a whole step, so the note had to be B-flat, not B.

Same recipe, a different accidental — this time a flat instead of a sharp.

Build the first four notes of the G major scale (you saw the full answer above; now reconstruct the start yourself). Fill in the blanks:

  • G up a whole step is ______.
  • Then a whole step is ______.
  • Then a half step is ______.
  • Then a whole step is ______.

Answer: G +W→ A, A +W→ B, B +H→ C (B to C is a natural half step, so no accidental needed here), C +W→ D. The scale keeps going D, E, F-sharp, G — and F-sharp is the one sharp that makes it G major.

Summary + what's next

A major scale is the fixed pattern W-W-H-W-W-W-H. C major matches the white keys because the white keys' natural half steps (E-F, B-C) already sit where the pattern's H's fall. Start anywhere else and the pattern forces sharps or flats — G major needs F-sharp, F major needs B-flat, D major needs two sharps.

You probably noticed each key seems to "own" a specific set of sharps or flats. Musicians do not re-derive them every time — they write those accidentals once at the start of the music as a key signature, and the sharps get added in a fixed order. That shortcut, and the order, is Lesson 05.
